Turned-Out Squat Shifts: Ankle and Toe Mobility for Second Position Plié

Description

How dancers open up the backs of the ankles, in turnout.

In a slightly turned-out squat, you shift slowly side to side, pressing the toes over as your knee travels out over the foot. It stretches the toes and the back of the ankle, and many people feel it in the inner thighs as well. I do.

Why it matters: ballet doesn't do its pliés in parallel. In second position, the ankle still has to bend fully while the knee stays over the toes in turnout. If the ankle runs out of range, the knee drops inwards and the foot rolls. Shifting side to side lets you find that range on each leg separately.

Keep the movement slow and notice where you feel it most: toes, ankles or inner thighs. That tells you which part of your plié needs the most attention. Hold a chair, barre or wall if you need one.

It's in the 30 Min Foot & Ankle Flexibility Class on our channel.
