Lunge and Release: Active Flexibility for Landings

Train Like a Ballerina Short 6 days ago

Description

Holding a stretch builds range. Moving through it with control is how you learn to use it.

The lunge and release takes you down into a deep lunge, then uses your supporting leg, your glutes, hamstrings and core, to draw you back up. So instead of just sitting in the range, you're getting strong through it. That's what we mean by active flexibility.

The clearest ballet link is landings. Coming down from a jump, especially something like a grand jeté, you need to sink into the floor with control and then push back out of it. That's the same job your legs are doing here, in a slower, safer version.

Let your front knee travel over your toes. It's allowed, and that's part of what makes the strength useful for plié and landings, rather than only working in a shallow range.

Six each side. It comes straight after the deep lunge hold in the 30 Min Full Body Mobility Class on our channel.
