Squat to Relevé: Ankle Strength Through Full Range for Dancers

Train Like a Ballerina Short Yesterday

Description

Stronger feet, prettier relevé. Start from the bottom.

This takes your ankles through their whole range under load: all the way down into a parallel squat, then all the way up into a double relevé. On the way up, your calves, glutes, hamstrings and core all have to work together.

That's exactly the job in ballet. Sautés, échappés and every relevé out of plié ask the ankle to go from fully bent to fully pointed, strongly and smoothly. Practising the full range together, rather than stretching one end and strengthening the other, is what makes the movement look effortless.

Go slowly in both directions, and hold onto a wall or barre if you need to. The lowering is just as useful as the rise.

It's one of the warm-up exercises in the 30 Min Foot & Ankle Flexibility Class on our channel.
