Deep Squat to Kneel: Ankle Mobility for a Deeper Plié

Train Like a Ballerina Guide 3 days ago

Description

Can you sit in a deep squat? Your plié depends on it.

This works the backs of your ankles, the calves and Achilles, as your knees travel forward over your feet. Lowering the knees to the floor from the squat adds a stretch through the toes too.

Here's why it matters for ballet. The depth of your demi-plié comes almost entirely from how far your ankle can bend while your heels stay down. That range is what gives you spring into a jump and somewhere to land softly afterwards. When it's missing, dancers tend to lift the heels or tip the pelvis to fake the depth.

If the full squat isn't there yet, that's completely fine. Just go down into the deep squat and back up. For the advanced option, come down into a double demi-plié, keeping knees, hips and shoulders square and pushing the heels down.

It's in the 30 Min Foot & Ankle Flexibility Class on our channel.
