Ankle CARs for Dancers: Full Ankle Range for Pointe and Relevé

Train Like a Ballerina Short 3 days ago

Description

Ankle CARs: your ankles are stiffer than you think.

CARs means controlled articular rotations. You take the ankle through its full range, flexing, circling through the diagonal into a point and back round, while the knee and hip stay completely still. Securing the knee is the whole point. If the leg moves, it does the work for the ankle.

Why dancers need this: every tendu, relevé and pointed foot comes from the ankle moving on its own, without the knee or hip helping out. Circling through every direction also asks the ankle to stay in control on the diagonals, where a foot tends to sickle in relevé. The more control you have through that whole circle, the cleaner your point looks.

Go slowly. If the circle gets smaller when you slow down, that's your real range, and that's the one to work on.

It's in the 30 Min Foot & Ankle Flexibility Class on our channel.
