Back Extension for Cambré: Length Before You Bend

Train Like a Ballerina Short 5 days ago

Description

A beautiful cambré back starts with length, not with bending.

This back extension works the muscles along your spine, with your glutes squeezed and legs long and pointed behind you. The cue I come back to is "don't crunch". Lengthen first, then lift only as far as you can while staying long.

Here's why that matters for ballet. A cambré back, or the lifted upper back you want in arabesque, should feel like the spine growing up and over, not folding into the lower back. When dancers crunch, all the bend gathers in one spot, usually the lumbar spine. Practising extension with length spreads the movement through the whole back.

If you want more, the tucked-toe version with the hips lifting slightly gives you a deeper stretch through the front of the body.

We finish in child's pose to release the back. It's the final exercise in the 30 Min Full Body Mobility Class on our channel.
