Description
If you're stretching the front of your hip and feeling it mostly in your lower back, this is for you.
The deep lunge hold lengthens the hip flexors of the back leg. The key detail is tucking your pelvis slightly underneath you. That small tuck stops your lower back arching to make up the distance, and moves the stretch to the front of the hip, where you actually want it.
This matters for two things in ballet. In arabesque, the back leg relies on the front of the hip lengthening, and a very common compensation is arching the lower back instead. In front splits, the back leg needs exactly the same range. Learning where the stretch should be, with the pelvis tucked, is how you train the hip rather than the back.
This builds the range. Lifting your arabesque higher also needs strength, which is what the lunge and release straight after it in the class works on.
Hold 45 to 60 seconds each side, with a cushion under the knee if you need one. It's in the 30 Min Full Body Mobility Class on our channel.
