Description
Hips and upper back both tight? You don't always need two separate stretches.
The rotational lunge is another compound one. The back leg gets a stretch through the front of the hip and the calf as you pull the heel down. The twist rotates your upper back. And if you come up to standing, the front leg has to do the work.
The part I want dancers to notice is the twist. So much of what we call épaulement, the way the shoulders and head turn against the hips, comes from rotation in the upper back. If that area is stiff, the turn ends up coming from the neck or the lower back instead, and port de bras starts to look effortful.
Keep the front knee in parallel while you twist, so the rotation comes from your upper body rather than your hips swinging round.
You'll find it in the 30 Min Full Body Mobility Class on our channel, alternating sides.
