Description
Turnout isn't just a feet thing. It starts at the hips, and this is one of my favourite ways to work them.
In 90-90, your front hip is rotating outwards, the same direction you use for turnout, and hinging forward over that leg stretches the glute and the deep rotators around the back of the hip. Your back leg sits in the opposite rotation, inwards, which dancers rarely train but which keeps the hips moving well in both directions.
Then the last rep stays down into pigeon, a longer hold for the same area.
The honest ballet note: this works on the range of rotation available at your hip. Holding turnout while you dance also takes strength, so think of this as making space for your turnout rather than creating it on its own.
Not everyone feels pigeon in the same spot. Some feel it more with the front leg tucked in, some at 90 degrees, so play with the angle.
It's in the 30 Min Full Body Mobility Class on our channel.
