Description
In Avatar Seven Havens, Jae finally finds Uki after spending all this time trying to rescue her from the Faceless, and she has to explain that she was NEVER kidnapped, because the missing friend he came to save actually helped fake the whole thing. Now when he first sees her underground, he’s ready to get her out of there and fight whoever he has to, but Uki tells him she WANTS to stay, which is pretty much the last answer he was expecting after visiting her family and promising to bring her home. From his perspective, somebody must have gotten into her head, because why would one of his own friends leave the Brigade to live with the people stealing their supplies? Well, Uki never wanted to join the Brigade in the first place, and the thing that decided her future wasn’t some big dream of protecting Ellora, it was setting her dad’s chair on fire when she was TEN. That’s when her family found out she could bend, and suddenly the life she imagined for herself stopped being something anybody else thought she needed to choose. She wanted to be a farmer or look after camodillos, she liked animals and making things grow, but once she had firebending, she became a bender for the Brigade instead, as if being able to light a chair meant she’d signed up for a military career. Jae tries to explain what serving means to him, because he actually DOES want to protect people and be part of something bigger, but that doesn’t change the fact that Uki wanted something different and never got to decide for herself. And that’s why the kidnapping matters, because simply leaving wouldn’t just make her an enemy in the eyes of the haven, it could turn her family into outcasts too, so the Faceless stage her disappearance to make it look like somebody took her instead of letting everybody know she joined willingly.
