Description
There are actually two different ways I like to tie the Slump Buster.
The first uses wire to rib the body and secure the pine squirrel strip. Separate the fibers anywhere the wire crosses the strip, then wrap directly over the exposed hide.
But you can eliminate the wire entirely and use your tying thread to do the same job.
Separate the squirrel fibers, make a couple of wraps directly over the hide, then move the thread forward to the next section and repeat.
Both methods accomplish essentially the same thing, and both make a durable fly.
Personally, I think the wire version is a little more durable overall, while the thread version eliminates one material and can be slightly quicker to tie.
Which version would you choose?
That's our second pattern in this month's sculpin series. Next week we're stepping things up with an articulated fly with some wild movement in the water—the Sculpzilla.
