We've reached the end of our four-part Sculpin Series, and we've filled this fly box with four very different streamer patterns!
We started with the Skulpin Bunny, a large, heavily weighted streamer that's surprisingly quick and easy to tie. Its Fish-Skull Sculpin Helmet helps it get down deep quickly.
Next came the Slump Buster, one of my personal favorite flies. It has a much smaller profile, still gets down quickly, and can be dead drifted, swung through the current, or stripped back like a traditional streamer.
Then we tied the Sculpzilla, an articulated streamer with some incredible movement. The rear section moves independently, while the rabbit strip, marabou, and soft hackle move with the current.
And finally, the classic Muddler Minnow. Unlike the other three patterns, this version has no added weight. Its deer hair head can actually make it want to rise toward the surface, giving us a completely different presentation.
Each pattern has its own advantages, and together they give us several ways to imitate sculpins for trout.
Next Thursday, I've got a fishing video where I'll be testing out Risen's new M14 fly rod. Then in November, we'll start a brand-new series focusing on grubs and worms!
