Description
The Muddler Minnow is one of those classic streamer patterns that every fly tier should try tying at least once.
Originally designed to imitate a sculpin, this fly uses paired sections of mottled turkey quill for the tail and wing, a flashy body, and a spun deer hair head that gives it a distinctive wide profile.
In this Short, I'll walk through the main steps of tying the Muddler Minnow, including how to position the turkey feathers, build the body, spin the deer hair, and trim the head into shape.
It's a little more involved than some of the other sculpin patterns we've tied this month, but once you get comfortable working with deer hair, it's a really enjoyable fly to tie.
And unlike our previous three sculpin patterns, this version doesn't have any added weight. That gives us some interesting options when fishing it.
The complete step-by-step Muddler Minnow tutorial is now live on my YouTube channel!
This is the fourth and final fly in our Sculpin Series.
