What's The First Fly You Tie On?

I only had an hour to fish before teaching a fly fishing class, so I had to pick the right fly.

At this spot, I figured a Near Nuff Crayfish would be a great choice.

Just a few weeks earlier, I had hooked into a really nice bass on this same fly, so I had a pretty good feeling it would work here too.

And sure enough... It did.

Of course, what fly you start with will depend entirely on the conditions and the specific water you're fishing.

So I'm curious... What's the first fly you tie on when you arrive at a new river or lake?

First Cast... Into A Tree

Guide | 1 months ago

When I got to the spot, I tied on a fly. Unfortunately... On the very first cast, I hooked a bush behind me. Fortunately, I got the fly back... but my confidence took a pretty good hit. And believe it or not... That wasn't the only bush I hooked that day. I...

I Was Done Fishing... Then This Happened

Guide | 1 months ago

While filming for today's video, I caught a little sunfish and decided it was time to head out. But I hadn't reeled my line in yet... And as I started walking away, a decent little bass went after my fly. Sometimes the fish just don't want you to leave. 🎣 ...

I Only Had 1 Hour to Fish, Before Class

Guide | 1 months ago

I arrived early to teach fly fishing classes at a boys summer camp, which meant I had one precious hour to fish this beautiful, crystal-clear river myself before the kids showed up. With only a little time to explore, I grabbed my fly rod and went looking f...

I Saw A Bigger Bass...

Guide | 1 months ago

After catching a small bass, I noticed a much bigger one sitting deep in the hole. So naturally... I had to try for it. It didn't happen on the first cast. Or the second. But eventually... I got him to eat. This Thursday's video has plenty more fish, beauti...

I Only Had 1 Hour To Fish!

NEW VIDEO THIS THURSDAY! 🎣 I only had an hour to fish before teaching a fly fishing class at a summer camp. Honestly, I almost didn't even bother. But when the water looks like this, it's hard not to sneak in a few casts. Turns out... An hour was more than...

Sometimes Fishing Should Be Simple

Guide | 1 months ago

Earlier this week I challenged myself to answer one question: If I could only fish five panfish fly patterns for the rest of my life... which five would they be? The truth is, none of us are ever going to limit ourselves to only five flies. But exercises li...

The Best Bluegill Fly You've Never Heard Of

Guide | 1 months ago

FULL VIDEO IS NOW LIVE! 🎣 If I could only keep one fly specifically for bluegill... I'd choose the Bully Bluegill. Not because it's the most realistic fly in my box. And not because it's complicated. I'd choose it because of how it fishes. The weight is bu...

The 5 Panfish Flies I'd Fish for the Rest of My Life

Guide | 1 months ago

If I could only carry five flies for panfish, these would be the ones. I wasn't trying to build a fly box that matched every hatch or covered every possible situation. Instead, I wanted five flies that fit my philosophy of panfish fishing: • Simple to tie •...

Panfish Aren't Nearly As Picky As You Think

Guide | 2 months ago

One thing became obvious almost immediately while building this hypothetical five-fly box... Panfish aren't nearly as picky as trout or even bass. Most of us aren't trophy hunting bluegill. We're taking the kids to a pond, sneaking out after work for an hou...

You Can Only Fish 5 Panfish Flies!

Why This Challenge Actually Matters
