About this video: Removing your background in OBS without a green screen can make your webcam look much cleaner in recordings and streams. In this video, we show you how to install the OBS Background Removal plugin, add it to your webcam, and adjust its settings to get the best results possible.
First things first, you will need to download the Background Removal plugin for OBS. There is a link in the description above. On the download page, scroll down and download the x64 Windows ZIP file. This plugin is available for other platforms, but we will be installing it on Windows in this tutorial.
Once the ZIP file has finished downloading, open your Downloads folder, right-click the file, select “Extract All,” and extract it. Open the new folder and move the OBS Background Removal folder to your desktop temporarily. From there, open your Local Disk, click “View,” select “Show,” and enable “Hidden items.” This will allow you to open the ProgramData folder.
Inside ProgramData, open the obs-studio folder and then the plugins folder. If there is no plugins folder, you can create one yourself. Drag the OBS Background Removal folder from your desktop into this plugins folder. The plugin is now installed, but you will need to restart OBS if it was already running.
After opening OBS, right-click your webcam source and select “Filters.” Under Effect Filters, click the plus icon and add “Background Removal.” The filter will start working immediately, but the default settings may leave rough edges or struggle to keep up with movement.
To improve the results, enable the advanced settings and test the available segmentation models. Robust Video Matting worked best for us, producing a much cleaner result than the default MediaPipe model. We also set the temporal smooth factor to one, disabled “Skip image based on similarity,” and increased the CPU frames calculated to two. If this causes lag while gaming or recording, reduce that setting back to one.
You can test the other segmentation models to find the best balance between clean edges, responsiveness, and performance for your setup. Once everything is configured, you can quickly turn the background removal effect on or off using the visibility button beside the filter.
With that, you now know how to remove your background in OBS without a green screen. If you have any questions or find settings that work even better, let us know in the comments. Otherwise, be sure to give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already!
