About this video: Building a community is one of the best things you can do, and a Discord server is the best place to do it. This is our complete guide on how to setup a Discord server for a community in 2026, going over everything you need to know to get your server created and set up for success.
First things first, you will need to create your server. You can convert an existing server into a community server as well, but for this guide, we are starting fresh with a brand new one. When you create your server, make sure to add a photo and a brief description of what your community will be about. These will show up in multiple places later on, so it is worth taking a minute to get them right.
Once your server is created, head into your server settings and go down to the "Community" tab. Enabling this unlocks all of the features Discord has built for community servers. Click "Enable Community" and follow the prompts. You will be required to have a rules channel and a community updates channel, and Discord can create both of these for you automatically. From there, you will confirm the required permissions and agree to Discord's community server guidelines. You should give those a read, as they are quick to get through and must be followed in your community.
With that, you can hop into the "Overview" tab to set your server description, primary language, and swap out your rules and updates channels if you ever need to. Next, you will want to set up your Welcome Screen. This is what new members see when they first join your server, so it is a great way to point people to the right channels right away. Choose the channels new members should check out, add a short description for each, and preview everything before you enable it.
Roles are a huge part of a community server, and they are something you need to configure for your server to work correctly. We walk through setting up the core roles you will want in the video, but you can create as many as your community needs. From there, do not skip the moderation settings. Here, you will set up rules screening along with AutoMod, which keeps your server safe and protected without needing to add any bots. We recommend enabling all of the AutoMod features.
Finally, you can head back into the server itself and set up your channels. Since you have already done most of the heavy lifting, this part is quick, and we go over all of the channels you will want for a community server in the video.
With that, you now know how to setup a Discord server for a community. If you have any questions, let us know in the comments. We will try our best to help you out.
Otherwise, be sure to give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already. It really helps us out, and it means a ton to me. Thanks in advance!
