About this video: Recording your screen on a Windows PC or laptop is easy using the built-in Snipping Tool. In this video, we show you how to record a selected area, an individual window, or your entire screen without downloading any additional software. We also cover how to include computer audio and your microphone in the recording.
To get started, press Windows Key + Shift + R to open the Snipping Tool’s screen recorder. You can also open the Snipping Tool by pressing the Print Screen key or searching for it in the Start menu. From there, select the record option and choose the part of your screen you want to capture.
If you only need to record one program, change the selection mode from Rectangle to Window and select the window you want. For a full-screen recording, use Rectangle mode and drag the selection from one corner of your screen to the opposite corner. Before starting, you can choose whether to record your computer’s audio, microphone, or both.
Once you stop recording, the Snipping Tool will let you preview the video. Your recordings are automatically saved in the Screen Recordings folder inside your Videos folder. You can also save the recording somewhere else or copy it to your clipboard to paste into a chat or another program. For shorter recordings, we even show you how to use the Snipping Tool’s GIF option to turn your recording into a GIF.
Finally, we explain when you may want to use OBS instead. OBS is a much more powerful option for recording gameplay, tutorials, multiple audio tracks, and videos with different scenes or transitions.
