About this video: Paper is one of the best server software options for running a fast, optimized Minecraft server with plugins. In this video, we show you how to make a Paper Minecraft server, from downloading the Paper server file to getting the server online and allowing your friends to join.
First things first, you will need to download Paper for Minecraft. There is a link in the description above that will take you to our complete Paper download guide. On that page, click the download button to go to the official Paper website, select Minecraft, and download the latest available build.
Once the Paper file has downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop named something like “Paper Server”. Move the Paper .jar file into this folder, and rename it to “paper.jar”. This makes the file easier to reference when we create the server startup file.
From there, create a new text document inside your server folder and open it with Notepad. Paste the startup command from the description above into the file. You can adjust the amount of RAM in this command depending on how much memory you want to give the server. Save the file as “run.bat” and make sure the “Save as type” option is set to “All Files”.
Now, double-click the run.bat file. Your Paper server will try to start, but it will stop the first time. This is normal because you need to agree to the Minecraft EULA. Open the eula.txt file that was created, change “eula=false” to “eula=true”, and save the file.
Double-click run.bat again, and your Paper Minecraft server will start. You can test it by opening Minecraft, going to Multiplayer, and joining with the server address “localhost”. Only you can use this address, but it lets you confirm that the server is working before inviting anyone else.
Paper also allows you to install plugins. Once you download the plugins you want, stop the server, place the plugin .jar files into the “plugins” folder, and start the server again. Paper will load the plugins automatically.
For your friends to join, you will need to port forward port 25565 on your router. There is a complete port forwarding guide linked in the description above. Once that is finished, your friends can join using your public IP address while the server is running.
