Description
With the assistance of the E&LS MoW crew, ELS 400 and 600 carefully back up and pull a string of hopper cars over a bad switch and a noticeable dip in the tracks—clearing out cars that have been sitting on the entrance to the Wells line for years! Maybe they'll fix that switch and start storing cars on the one mile of track they didn't remove to the east of Channing.
A cold rain and falling leaves made this southbound Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad trip incredibly difficult across many grades. At times, the train was crawling and barely moving—you could hear the wheels squeak as they started to spin on the slick rails! After passing Merriman Road, they couldn't conquer the grade and had to back up to try it again, leaving us waiting nearly an hour at the next vantage point.
Apparently, after passing East Kingsford, they stalled 4 to 5 times between County N and County O in Wisconsin, ultimately leaving their train tied down near a crossing to try again the following day.
