Description
I arrived at County O in northern Wisconsin on Friday morning to find a group of railfans waiting for E&LS 1221 and 1224 (SD9s). The vintage engines were coming light from Pembine to rescue ELS 400 (GP38) and 600 (FP7), which had stalled their train the night before in the cold rain and wet leaves.
Watch as all four locomotives lash up for an awesome smoke show! It's exactly what every railfan hopes to see as they unleash their power and pull the heavy train up the grade toward Pembine.
The drama didn't end there. After arriving in Pembine, the crews tried to get track rights on the CN. They only needed an hour to finish their work, but both crews ended up sitting and waiting for two hours after being refused track authority. When an inbound CN train finally arrived, a plan was made for them to take the freight brought down by ELS 400 and 600. First, however, 1221 and 1224 needed to move the inbound freight along with a few empty propane tankers.
But after all the planning and radio chatter, CN changed their mind. They decided to just leave town without taking any of the E&LS freight brought south!
Three hours after the waiting began, CN finally granted E&LS track authority—effectively killing any chance of the E&LS crew getting back to Michigan before the end of the day. They had to spend another hour dealing with the freight they just brought down and pulling out extra cars. Frustratingly, all of this could have been wrapped up well before CN ever made it to town.
