About this video: Server lag is one of the most frustrating things you can run into when playing Minecraft with friends, and in this video, we go over six tips to make your Minecraft server lag free. From pregenerating your world to finding exactly what is causing your lag, these are the best ways we know to get a smooth, stable server for you and your friends to play on.
First things first, one of the biggest causes of server lag is your world generating new chunks as players explore. To fix this, we use a chunk pregenerator called Chunky. Once Chunky is installed, you can pregenerate your world with a few simple commands. Run "chunky center" with your x and z coordinates to set the middle of your world, then "chunky radius" with the radius you want to generate, and finally "chunky start" to begin. This generates all of your chunks ahead of time so the server does not have to do it while players are online.
Next, the server software you are running makes a huge difference. If you are on vanilla, switching to Paper is one of the easiest ways to get a big performance boost. Paper does not support mods, but it is far more optimized than vanilla and works great with plugins. If you are running a Fabric server and want to keep your mods, you can add Lithium instead. Lithium works with Fabric to improve entity performance on your server without changing how the game plays.
From there, it is worth looking at your hardware. Minecraft servers need enough RAM to run smoothly, and we recommend at least 4GB, with 8GB and up if you are running a modded server. If your hardware simply cannot keep up, it may be time to upgrade or move to a setup built for running Minecraft well. Paid hosting can also be a great option here since it takes the hardware side off of your plate entirely.
With that, another great way to reduce lag is optimizing your server files directly. There are a number of settings in your server's configuration files that can be tweaked to improve performance, and we have a complete guide on the best server optimizations linked in the description above.
Next, if you want to find exactly what is causing your lag, you will want to install Spark. Spark is a performance profiler that shows you what is slowing your server down. Once it is installed, you can run "/tps" to check your server's ticks per second, and use "/spark profiler start" and "/spark profiler stop" to run a full profile. This will show you exactly what is eating up your server's performance so you can fix it directly.
Last but not least, you can try a mod like LagFixer. This one is a bit more divisive. Some players swear by it, while others will not touch it, but it is easy to install and you can often see instant results. What is nice about LagFixer is that you can turn its individual modules on and off, so you can fine tune exactly what it is doing to your server.
