Why are the Native Americans making a demographic comeback? After centuries of desolation and abuse, the indigenous peoples of the Americas finally seemed to have a respite from the horrors they endured under the mass epidemics and slavery many faced after Columbus first arrived in the 15th century. The indigenous population in most areas of the Western Hemisphere sharply declined in the century following discover by the European colonizers and continued to gradual decline for most of the post-colonial period until now they have become a minority in almost all nations in the Americas. However with the introduction of modern medicine and new technology, their infant mortality has seen a dramatic reduction, leading to high population growth similar to other economically transitioning regions of the world. There are now nearly 100 million Native American Indians throughout North and South America and their populations in most countries continues to grow, either due to high fertility rates (as is the case in most of Hispanic America and Canada) or due to immigration from these regions. Although their populations may never reach the same levels they had in the past, they are still making at least a partial demographic comeback. Thanks for watching
