Description

What's the difference between Persians and Iranians? Despite Persia/Persians often being used interchangeably with Iran/Iranians, there are many important distinctions here. Iranian is used as a term to describe all citizens of the modern nation-state of Iran, while also being used more broadly for all related people groups under the Iranian/Iranic ethnolinguistic banner stretching from Turkey to Pakistan. The Persians are a distinct ethnic group comprising the largest ethnicity and dominant cultural and political force in the nation of Iran today, with the Farsi/Persian language now being widespread among all ethnic groups in the country as well as neighboring Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Despite this, ethnic Persians are estimated to make up less than half of the total Iranian population, as I discuss in this short today, with massive minorities of Kurds, Mazanderanis, Gilakis, Baloch, Arabs, Lurs, Turkmen, Azeris and many others.
