Description
The Iranian diaspora is a significant and growing number of individuals of Persian, Lur, Baloch, Mazanderani, Kurdish, Azeri or other Iranian ancestry who have left the country during different periods of time in distinct waves, arriving in various parts of the planet. Some of the oldest Iranians outside the Iranian plateau include many millions in the Gulf Arab states who may be culturally and linguistically assimilated into the local population to varying extents (around 10% of the population of the Eastern Arabian peninsula has Iranian ancestry), to the Parsis and Iranis of India who descend from ancient Zoroastrian refugees and of course the most recent group of Iranian immigrants who arrived in the Western World during and after the 1979 revolution, who are possibly the most distinct religiously and ideologically from our modern stereotype of a strict and highly religious Iranian society.
Many of you may not know this, but I actually have Iranian ancestors myself, specifically from the provinces of Gilan and Zanjan; my mom’s dad was born in the country and immigrated to Texas during the 60s before the Revolution. I don’t speak their language, I don’t celebrate their holidays, I’ve never been there, I cannot speak for the Iranian people, either inside the country or in the diaspora, but I can observe the findings of groups that have surveyed or enumerated their thoughts, actions and opinions. Thanks for watching!
