What is Africa's island of albinos? Albinism is a genetic condition affecting roughly 1 in every 10,000 to 1 in 20,000 human births worldwide leading to a full or partial deficiency in pigmentation of the skin, hair and/or eyes, giving them a very white and pale appearance. Although present in all ethnic and racial population, surprisingly, albino naturally occurs at it's highest rate in Sub-Saharan Africa and among individuals of African descent, especially in East Africa. The country of Tanzania has the largest incidence of people with albinism worldwide, numbering around 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 births in the country, meaning there are tens of thousands, possibly even a hundred thousand. People with albinism have long faced discrimination, violence and prejudice throughout Africa for a myriad of reasons and it may be a struggle for them to survive day to day without running into some sort of conflict or violent altercation. As a result, many Tanzanians with albinism have fled and established a community on Ukerewe Island, the largest and most populous island in Lake Victoria with around half a million inhabitants as of 2024, of whom around 5-10% have albinism (0.03% according to official statistics, but this is an undercount).
Although not totally free of discrimination, the albino community on Ukerewe is the largest and most densely packed grouping of its kind in the world, and they are struggling to preserve their rights and protect themselves. While editing I discovered the politically correct term is “people with albinism” (PWA) as “albinos” may be offensive (???) I really don’t get it. Apologies for the freakout in the description of the last short. Everything's fine now (not really lol). Please donate. Thanks for watching! Protect the albinos!
