What happened to the Free Blacks or Free People of Color? The Free Blacks were those of full or partial African ancestry in the United States who were not enslaved, which at any given time was around 10-15% of the Black population, which in turn was about 10-15% of the US American population. They were concentrated mainly in the center of the country such as Virginia, Maryland and some Northeast states like New York. Their experiences and attitudes towards Whites and enslaved Blacks varied significantly and there were major cultural and genetic differences between them. Eventually, after the emancipation of all slaves in the United States, the Free Blacks and formerly enslaved Blacks known as Freedmen gradually began to fuse together into a single community, although there is still a wide spectrum in the genetics and appearance of Black Americans today.
