Video 3 – Building Gentle Mottling and Layered Undertones
Welcome back! In this third video, we're continuing to bring little Molly to life, gradually building up the beautiful, soft skin tones of a slightly older baby.
We'll begin with a very subtle layer of crimson oxide mottling, using a mottling sponge to introduce gentle variations in the skin without the stronger, blotchier appearance we used for our newborn baby. I'll show you how I mix and apply the paint, soften any unwanted sponge marks, and build up colour gradually for a lovely natural finish.
We'll then return to our undertones, introducing cyan and a soft plum shade to add delicate veining, shadows and depth around the creases, ears, lips and other areas where the skin is naturally thinner.
As always, it's all about working with light layers, taking our time and allowing the colours to develop naturally. And, of course, there's a little studio chatter along the way!
So pop the kettle on, get comfortable, and come and paint along with me! ❤️
