Video 5 – Creases and wrinkles, and mottling
Welcome back to Video 5 of my Comprehensive Silicone Doll Painting Course!
In this lesson, we're going to be adding some of those lovely little details that really help bring our silicone baby to life!
First, I'll show you one of my favourite little tricks using Thi-Vex silicone thickener. By thickening our silicone paint and then thinning it back down again, we can create a mixture that behaves a little differently from ordinary thinned silicone, making it particularly useful for painting delicate creases and those tricky little areas where we want our colour to stay put.
We'll then work our way around our baby, adding those subtle purplish-red tones that we naturally see in skin folds and creases, including the tiny fingers and toes, wrists, neck, ears and tummy button. I'll show you how I apply and gently blot the paint to create soft, natural-looking colour without leaving obvious brush marks.
Next, we're going to have some fun with mottling! I'll show you how I make my own mottling sponge using little pieces of wedge sponge, and how we can use this to build up beautiful, subtle variations in the skin colour, adding texture, warmth and depth.
Finally, we'll cure our paint and apply a little SFP matting powder so we can have a good look at how our colours are developing.
As always, remember that we're building our realism gradually. It's all these little touches, one layer at a time, that make such a difference to the finished baby.
So, pop the kettle on, get yourself comfortable, and let's do some painting!
Happy painting!
