In Herat, Afghanistan, one of our colleague nurses was arrested for allegedly violating the dress code and was released two days later after she, her husband, and family signed a document saying she would abide by strict dress requirements. This incident, along with so many other restrictions women face, are creating an erasure of women from public life.
At MSF’s medical projects across seven Afghan provinces, we are meeting the needs of our female patients, but we are extremely concerned that the pressures being put on women by the authorities will result in a broader lack of access to health care for women and their children.
