Description
After months of treatment at the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reconstructive surgery hospital in Amman, Jordan, three young Palestinians — Eman, Abdelhadi and Bashir — returned home to Gaza.
Their stories show the challenges faced by patients who have survived severe injuries and received specialized care abroad; they return home to a health system that has been devastated by years of war and will not be able to support ongoing care.
Medical evacuations remain a lifeline for thousands of people in Gaza who cannot access the care they need, but Israeli authorities only approve a small fraction of requests for medical evacuation, with no explanation for denials.
MSF calls for the urgent establishment of a clear, predictable medical evacuation system out of Gaza. Patients must be able to access the specialized care that is unavailable in Gaza, and be guaranteed the right to return home safely, voluntarily, and with dignity when they choose to do so.
