Crossing La Graciosa: Volcanic Peaks and Tunnels, Rare Blossoms & Ocean Power

Description

Join us on a sweeping journey across La Graciosa, the smallest inhabited island of the Canary archipelago and one of Europe’s last true car‑free sanctuaries. This tiny but dramatic island—part of the protected Chinijo Archipelago Nature Reserve—is usually defined by its golden dunes, volcanic silhouettes, and raw Atlantic energy. But this year, after an exceptionally wet winter, La Graciosa reveals a rare spectacle: vast carpets of wildflowers transforming its normally arid landscape into a fleeting oasis.

Our adventure begins with a westward hike toward Montaña Amarilla, the island’s iconic yellow volcanic cone. This time, its slopes are wrapped in a shimmering sea of white blossoms, softening the rugged terrain in a way that only happens once in many years.

We then head east to the wild Playa de las Conchas, famous for its powerful, dangerous waves and its sweeping views of the red‑hued Montaña Bermeja rising in the distance. From there, we return to the shoreline to explore the dramatic lava tunnels and the natural arches of Los Caletones, where the Atlantic crashes into caverns carved by ancient eruptions.

The highlight of the trip is the ascent along the ridge of Agujas Grandes. Strong winds whip across the cliffs, adding intensity to the already breathtaking panorama. From above, the island’s colorful volcanic rims and crater fields glow against the deep blue of the surrounding sea. As we traverse from Agujas Chicas to Agujas Grandes, the sun sinks toward the horizon, painting the landscape in warm tones and bringing this unforgettable journey to a perfect close.
