Fuerteventura / Hiking Volcán de la Arena: Windmills, Red Iceplants & Winter Flowers

Description

A beautiful winter hike showcasing the magnificent landscapes of Fuerteventura, dotted with rare blossoms in early 2026.

We begin in Villaverde and make our way toward the historic Molinos de Villaverde. These impressive windmills stand proudly above the landscape, surrounded by striking red carpets of slenderleaf iceplant (Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum). We're even lucky to spot a few Barbary ground squirrels darting between the stones.

All of this is just the warm‑up for the ascent of Volcán de la Arena, the imposing volcano that dominates the area. Its twin craters offer a spectacular ridge walk, and even here the slopes are sprinkled with yellow and purple winter blossoms, adding unexpected bursts of color to the volcanic terrain.
