The one place they learned that effort and outcome live on different timelines, and that's not a flaw in the system...
That's the whole damn game!
We had that. And as always, the "adults" ruined it.
We turned player development into a transfer portal.
We turned "get better" into "get seen."
We turned "have fun" into "sprints after losses"
We built an entire economy around 11-year-olds
chasing rankings instead of reps,
parents chasing exposure instead of growth,
and coaches optimizing for Sunday tournaments instead of Tuesday practices where the actual learning happens.
Travel teams at 9.
Recruiting rankings at 12.
"Exposure camps" before puberty?
We took the one part of childhood that was supposed to be a slow burn, and we financialized it into another fast-food, dopamine spiked, instant reward loop.
The kid who learns to love the unglamorous Tuesday practice...
the one with no trophy, no audience, no Instagram story...
that kid is learning something most adults still haven't figured out.
That's the lesson.
That was always the lesson.
We just got too busy selling the highlight reel to notice we buried it under bullshit.
