🚨 Why Did the FBI Raid Eric Swalwell? "Rusty Thumbs" Explained 🚨
The FBI raided Eric Swalwell — meeting him at San Francisco International Airport with a search warrant, seizing his phone, and searching his Washington, D.C. home the next day. And that wasn't even his worst news of the week. Three days earlier, the FBI's own declassified files on Swalwell and suspected Chinese spy Fang Fang (Christine Fang) went public — files his lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to the FBI director to keep sealed.
Inside the declassified FBI files: the bureau identified Fang's parents as Chinese intelligence (MSS) agents, tried to recruit her as an informant under the code name "Rusty Thumbs," then opened a federal criminal investigation — code-named "Freshman Fifteen" — that initially targeted Swalwell himself in a bribery scheme. In FBI interviews, Swalwell admitted the relationship, admitted her interns were placed in his congressional office, and admitted his campaign finance system couldn't detect the alleged straw donations. Despite what the files call strong evidence of illegal campaign donations, the Department of Justice declined to prosecute anyone — and the early stages of the case were overseen in part by the Public Integrity Section under prosecutor Jack Smith, who later pursued Donald Trump. No document explains why no one was charged.
Meanwhile, a federal judge found probable cause of a federal crime to issue this weekend's search warrants — part of a previously unreported federal investigation into misconduct allegations Swalwell denies, alongside criminal investigations by the Manhattan DA and LA Sheriff. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe says he can't explain why the FBI is involved. Kevin McCarthy says the FBI warned House leadership before Swalwell was seated on the Intelligence Committee with a security clearance.
