Description
Most guitarists memorize scales and licks, but rhythm is what makes ideas sound musical.
In this lesson, I use the classic “shave and a haircut” rhythm to show how you can generate endless melodic ideas from a scale pattern you already know. Start by clapping or tapping the rhythm over a backing track, then apply notes while keeping the rhythm intact.
Familiar rhythms naturally sound musical because your brain has heard them your whole life. Even before you’re targeting chord tones, you’ll start creating phrases that feel intentional. As you improve, you can line those rhythms up with important beats and chord tones to make your solos even stronger.
Anybody can copy someone else’s lick. When you borrow a rhythm, people don’t think, “I’ve heard that before.” They just think, “That sounds really musical,” without realizing why.
