Description
Want your guitar to sound like a violin? This simple volume swell technique creates smooth, singing notes that are perfect for expressive melodies and ambient solos.
The key is learning the motion. Start with your guitar’s volume turned all the way down. Hold the pick between the pads of your fingers so you can lightly pluck the string while your pinky rests underneath the volume knob. As you pull your hand back after picking the note, roll the volume knob open to create a smooth swell instead of a picked attack.
Add a little delay or reverb, and you’ll get a beautiful violin-like effect that’s perfect for improvisation, harmonized echoes, and atmospheric playing. This is the same type of approach heard in players like Yngwie Malmsteen on Echo Etude and many other expressive guitarists.
Try it slowly at first, the motion is the hardest part. Once it clicks, it becomes second nature.
