How to Write a Great Melody

One of the easiest ways to write a strong melody is to let the chords do the work.

In this example, I’m using the same chord shape (the E-shape barre chord) and moving it through B minor → A major → F# minor → G major.

Instead of playing the full chords, I’m only playing the B string, which gives me one note from each chord (the fifth). Those notes become the backbone of the melody.

Next, I place those target notes on beats 1 and 3 (or very close to them). Once those anchor points are established, I simply create interesting ways to approach each note using passing tones, slides, bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, or other melodic ideas.

The important part isn’t copying my exact notes, it’s understanding the process.

Choose target notes from the chords, place them on strong beats, then use your own creativity to connect them.

That’s a simple formula for writing melodies that naturally fit the harmony while still sounding personal and expressive.
