One of the fastest ways to become more creative is to borrow a rhythm instead of borrowing someone else’s notes.
In this lesson, I use the classic “Shave and a Haircut” rhythm over a blues backing track to show how a simple rhythmic idea can generate fresh melodic phrases. Once you understand this concept, you can take rhythms from songs, jingles, or even everyday sounds and turn them into original guitar ideas.
Remember: rhythm is often the most memorable part of a melody. Change the notes, keep the rhythm, and people can still recognize the tune. Try this exercise with your own backing tracks and see what you come up with!
