ONSHAPE CAD CHALLENGE 1.16 🔥
In this Onshape CAD Challenge 1.16, we model the given mechanical component using TWO different approaches:
🔹 Bottom-to-Top
🔹 Front-to-Back
This is an excellent Onshape practice problem for understanding how to interpret orthographic projections and convert 2D engineering drawings into a 3D CAD model.
We begin by carefully studying the given FRONT VIEW, TOP VIEW and RIGHT SIDE VIEW and then transfer the important dimensions into Onshape.
The first approach starts from the TOP PLANE, where we create the base rectangle and then build the remaining geometry using sketches and extrusions.
The second approach starts from the FRONT PLANE and creates the front profile first, followed by the required extrusions.
The same final component is obtained using both approaches.
📐 DIMENSIONS USED IN THIS CHALLENGE:
• Overall width = 125 mm
• Overall depth = 60 mm
• Base thickness = 15 mm
• Outer circular diameter = 40 mm
• Inner hole diameter = 20 mm
• Centre location = 50 mm from the left edge
• Centre location = 35 mm from the bottom edge
• Profile extrusion = 40 mm
🎯 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
✔ How to read orthographic projections
✔ How to understand Front, Top and Right Side Views
✔ How to transfer dimensions from 2D drawings into Onshape
✔ Creating rectangles using the Corner Rectangle tool
✔ Creating lines and arcs in Onshape
✔ Creating concentric circles
✔ Applying dimensions accurately
✔ Using tangent constraints
✔ Creating sketches on different planes
✔ Using the Extrude command
✔ Selecting bounded sketch regions for extrusion
✔ Understanding Bottom-to-Top modelling
✔ Understanding Front-to-Back modelling
✔ Checking the final model using the Measure tool
💡 WHY THIS IS A GOOD PRACTICE PROBLEM
The real challenge is not simply creating the solid.
You need to understand how the different orthographic views relate to one another and decide which view should be used to create each feature.
This makes Challenge 1.16 a very useful exercise for students who are learning:
• Onshape
• 3D CAD Modelling
• Engineering Drawing
• Orthographic Projection
• Mechanical Design
If you are a Mechanical Engineering student, this type of exercise can significantly improve your ability to visualize a 3D component from 2D engineering drawings.
