Can you model this part in Onshape from a 2D engineering drawing?

🔥 ONshape CAD Challenge 1.13

In this challenge, we are going to convert a detailed 2D engineering drawing into a complete 3D CAD model using Onshape.

But this one comes with an important lesson: CAD modelling is iterative.

I actually modelled this part five times — 1.13A, 1.13B, 1.13C, 1.13D and finally 1.13E — because I kept getting an incorrect volume. Each attempt helped me identify and fix another mistake.

The biggest lesson was understanding the tangency conditions in the drawing. A line cannot simply be connected to a circle or arc; the geometry has to satisfy the required tangency and dimensional constraints.

In this video, I'll show you how to carefully interpret the drawing, construct the sketch, maintain tangency, use construction geometry, mirror the profile and finally create the 3D part with a single 5 mm extrusion.

🔧 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

✅ How to read a detailed engineering drawing
✅ How to identify construction geometry
✅ Creating circles with specified diameters
✅ Using construction lines
✅ Applying angular dimensions
✅ Creating tangent relationships
✅ Using the Parallel constraint
✅ Trimming unwanted sketch geometry
✅ Creating tangent arcs
✅ Using the Fillet tool
✅ Using Extend and Trim
✅ Mirroring sketch geometry
✅ Creating a single extrusion
✅ Checking the final volume using the Measure tool
✅ Debugging CAD modelling errors

📐 FINAL VOLUME:

9,534 mm³

The measured value is approximately 9,533.8 mm³, which rounds to 9,534 mm³.

🎯 THE BIG LESSON:

Don't worry if your first model is wrong.

CAD modelling is an iterative process. Build the model, check the result, identify the error, fix it and try again.

Sometimes one missed tangent condition or one incorrectly interpreted dimension can completely change the final result.
