Description
It is time to care for my carnivorous plants, and while trimming old Venus flytrap leaves, I open them up to see what insects are left inside in extreme macro detail. Some of the contents were bizarre.
Some of the traps contain the remains of old captures, including a ladybird, dissolved insects, fungal strands and the strange little details left behind after the trap has finished feeding. Whenever I can, I match the remains with short clips showing how those insects were originally caught.
I also check my Sarracenia pitcher plants after placing them near a wildflower meadow, where the traps have filled with flies, beetles, hoverflies and other insects. Some of the pitchers are almost full to the brim, giving a completely different look at what carnivorous plants can catch.
I had been away working at Chelsea Flower Show, so this became part plant care, part inspection and part hidden-world carnivorous plant rummage.
