A grasshopper ends up on my Cape Sundew, and this turns into the fastest sundew reaction I have ever filmed.
Despite the grasshopper’s strong legs, the sticky Drosera tentacles hold on and the leaf starts wrapping around it surprisingly quickly. I film the encounter in 4K extreme macro, showing the details of the grasshopper, the sundew’s sticky droplets and the rapid movement of the leaf as the plant reacts.
The video also includes timelapse footage showing how quickly the sundew begins to curl around the insect, making this one of the most dramatic sundew leaf rolls I have captured so far and one of the reasons these are my favourite carnivorous plants.
