Description

After 9 years of road life, this may be my favorite free campsite I’ve ever found!

✨ Before I get into it, don’t forget to SAVE THIS POST and follow @bearfoottheory for help in planning your own wild, off-grid adventures.

We decided to take the long way from Bluff to Monticello, Utah—driving as far as we could on dirt roads through Bears Ears National Monument. With no plan, we stumbled on this spot just before sunset. Total solitude and just look at this view!

I didn’t find this campsite on iOverlander (though I use that app almost daily). This one came from a combo of tools:

☑️ OnX Offroad to check land boundaries + road access
☑️ Google satellite view to scout open areas that look like potential campsites
☑️ Benchmark Atlases as a backup

Sometimes the best campsites aren’t on a list. You just have to do some digging and have a willingness to explore the unknown. You never know what you’ll find out here…and that’s exactly what makes it so fun.

I’ll give you all a hint on this one….this is somewhere near Elk Ridge and took us about 2 hours of driving on dirt roads to get here. The 4wd and high clearance we have on our @rossmonster Baja are handy but I think it’s possible in a normal vehicle (although it will be slower going).

Oh and when you’re out here (and elsewhere) exploring, always Leave No Trace. This campsite was in pristine condition. No toilet paper and no trash…which sadly isn’t the norm. We all gotta do our part to keep places like this beautiful. Please and thank you!
