Description
I obviously think van life is amazing — it’s given me freedom, adventure, and a deeper connection to the places I travel.
But a lot of what you see on social media is curated to perform.
And after 9 years on the road, I’ve noticed how those highlight reels can perpetuate stereotypes that are unrealistic or downright discouraging.
So let me break it down these common myths for you — here’s what van life is really like.
❌ You have to live in your van full-time to call it van life.✅ Nope. Part-time, weekends, sabbaticals — it all counts. If you’re sleeping in your rig, you’re doing van life.
❌ Every day on the road looks like a perfectly curated Instagram reel.✅What you don’t see: dishes in the sink, sweaty dusty clothes, and dog hair everywhere.
❌ Your rig needs to be picture perfect✅ Function is better than aesthetics. I’ve seen gorgeous vans that are overloaded, impractical, and falling apart behind the scenes.
❌ Van life is only for the young and wild — not grown-ups with responsibilities.✅ There’s no age limit on adventure….and remote work options make it more feasible even for those with 9-5 jobs
❌ Once you have kids, the van life chapter is over.✅ It’s definitely more chaotic and less relaxing, but it’s also pretty magical being able to spend so much time in nature with a little one.
❌ Good luck finding free campsites — it’s so crowded it’s nearly impossible.✅ There’s plenty of space out here — you just have to do a little digging, take a chance on the less obvious spots, and look beyond the top hits on the apps.
❌ If you’re paying for campsites, you’re doing it wrong.✅ Sometimes paying for a spot means peace of mind, a hot shower, or convenience. It’s not “cheating” — it’s balance.
