Ojo De Liebre in Baja is one of the largest caving grounds for grey whales on earth and is of the few places you’re pretty much guaranteed to see the whales up close.
After a short boat ride through the lagoon, we stopped and were quickly surrounded by whale spouts in every direction. The captain turned off the motor and before we knew it, the whales were swimming right up to the boat. It was amazing to be so close to them, and our 2-year old son Herbie absolutely loved it too!
The tour cost 1300 pesos per adult ($65 USD) and lasted 1.5 hours. I recommend you cover up (the sun was intense) and bring layers (for wind), a water bottle, and your camera. You can also camp right on the shores of the lagoon for 250 pesos ($12 USD) a night.
Note: The captains don’t feed the whales to attract them or chase after them. The whales must come to you.
You are allowed to touch the whales if they get close enough. However doing some research afterwards, I read that it can actually be harmful to the whales to touch them because we can transfer bacteria (as well as sunscreen residue) to their skin. I’m not an expert on this and I did think the tour was conducted in a responsible, respectful way, but I wanted to share that info as food for thought.
