Description
A pursuit on northbound Interstate 5 near Grand Mound ended with a deputy-involved shooting early Sunday after authorities said a suspect fired at a Washington State Patrol vehicle and later displayed a gun while trying to escape.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said that at about 6:18 a.m., its deputies assisted the Washington State Patrol with a pursuit on northbound I-5 near milepost 88 after the suspect reportedly fired at a pursuing WSP patrol vehicle.
Authorities said spike strips were successfully deployed, and the suspect's SUV eventually lost control and hit the barrier just before the Exit 88 overpass.
The man then jumped over the freeway barrier, ran across I-5, crossed a field, then followed the railroad tracks.
He then climbed over a barbed wire fence and fell onto the other side.
Deputies confronted the suspect, who attempted to flee, and a Taser was deployed, the sheriff’s office said. During the encounter, the suspect displayed a gun, and a deputy fired three times. The suspect was not hit.
