Front Cross Sling Troubleshooting | The correct Shoulder Flip

Description

If your Front Cross Sling lets baby lean away or the fabric creeps up toward their face, your shoulder flip is almost certainly the culprit. This video shows you the difference between an open and a closed shoulder flip, and why it matters more than it looks. This is one of the lessons from my FREE Front Carry Basics course.

What I cover in this video:
- Open vs closed shoulder flip: an open flip adds freedom but less support, a closed flip adds tension where you need it
- Why that matters for safety: with open flips, the leaning hazard gets bigger and the fabric is more likely to wander up toward baby's face. A closed flip keeps the top of the carry snug and helps keep the airway clear.
- When an open flip does make sense (a bigger toddler who wants their arms free, and you're actively supervising)
- Flat reef knot vs granny knot, so slack doesn't creep back into your carry
- How to make the shoulder flip after tying, if you find it tricky during setup, and how to check the fabric on your back isn't twisted when you do

The rule I teach: unless you're deliberately giving a big toddler more freedom, a shoulder flip should always be a closed one.

⏱️ Chapters:
0:00 Open vs closed shoulder flips
0:45 How each one is made
1:11 Why open flips increase the leaning hazard
1:39 When an open flip makes sense
2:03 Reef knot vs granny knot
2:51 Making the flip after tying the carry
4:55 Checking your back isn't twisted

✅ Always check: close enough to kiss, chin off the chest, face in view, knees higher than the bum, back supported, moving as one unit.
