On July 21st, 2026, at approximately 6:03 a.m., LVMPD Communications received a report of a physical altercation at a business in the 5100 block of Boulder Highway. The caller could be heard yelling at several individuals and telling one person not to throw a rock. Several officers were immediately dispatched, and one arrived a short time later.

As the officer parked and began exiting his patrol vehicle, he heard what he believed to be gunfire coming from inside of the business followed by several individuals running from the area. Simultaneously, the individual who called police advised LVMPD Communications that someone had been shot. As Officer Cristobal Magana approached the front of the store and, 35-year-old Travis Ward quickly exited the business armed with a gun.

Officer Magana gave verbal commands for Ward to drop the gun, but he refused to comply causing the officer to discharge his firearm, striking Ward. The suspect was taken into custody, and medical personnel were requested and responded. Despite their lifesaving efforts, Ward was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Additional officers arrived and entered the business where they located a male who had been shot.

Medical personnel transported that male to a local hospital in critical condition. It was later learned that Ward arrived at the business during the original physical altercation. The suspect entered the store and fired one round, striking the victim. Ward then exited the business, and officer Magana encountered him near the exit where the officer-involved shooting occurred.
