Your kid throws hard at 12. Will it last? And if they don’t throw hard yet, can they catch up?
This video answers three questions every parent of a young pitcher eventually asks: what makes some 12-year-olds throw harder than others, whether hard throwers at 12 and 18 get there the same way, and how many early hard throwers are still ahead years later.
The short version: it isn’t just size. Hard-throwing 12-year-olds already move well, and the years after that are mostly the body catching up. Early velocity tends to stick, but where a kid ranks at 12 isn’t locked in. Kids in the middle move up all the time, and one kid went from the bottom third to the top.
If you take one thing from this: get a velocity number on your kid now and another in 6-12 months, and compare it to kids their age, not their teammates.
