Description
Diego Castillo hit his first big league home run in Milwaukee in 2022. Over the next few seasons he moved through the Diamondbacks, Mets, Royals and Twins organizations and kept hearing the same thing: we like the way you play, but we're full. By 2025 his power was slipping, and he decided he needed to change something.
Diego walks through the whole road: growing up across the street from a baseball field, signing with the Yankees at 16, seven years in the minors, the trade to Pittsburgh, and his MLB debut in front of a packed crowd in St. Louis. Then the years of waiting in Triple-A for a call that didn't come.
At Driveline Tampa, Eric Kozak, Driveline's Florida hitting coordinator, found that Diego's swing had gotten slow. They worked on bat speed and staying balanced through the load, with daily cage work against high-velocity machines. Diego took that swing to the Mexican League, started hot, and signed with the Rangers. In Triple-A Round Rock he hit .304 and struck out 10.8% of the time, less than half the Triple-A average. Now he's back for round two, because his bat speed dropped over the season.
For hitters, parents and coaches who want to see what a swing change looks like for a pro trying to get back to the big leagues.
